This study is conducted by forming a team of surveyors who visited parts of Hwaseong City to meet senior citizens over 65 and measure their K-MMSE. Based on the survey results, those who scored 24-26 points were considered as MCI(mildly cognitive impaired) group. The author then examined how this group performed on the short-form GDS test.
Each group including the MCI group is divided by the degree of progress of cognitive impairment, including the normal group, MCI group, mid-level cognitive impaired group, and severely cognitive impaired group whose average scores of 3.96, 5.00, 5.92, and 9.00, respectively, were different with statistical significance. In terms of frequency, the MCI group accounted for the most number with 18(score over 7.00), with an attendant difference with statistical significance. The difference in frequency between those earning the score of 10 and 7 within the MCI group was 4.5 times, showing the highest degree of frequency among those groups earning the short-form GDS score of more than 7.00. The short-form GDS score of 7.00 is considered a stage just before the onset of depression, which called for a preemptive intervention before it is too late.
